How Do Customers Find a Right Mixer for Their Material Handling
In most time, there are many customers do not know which mixer is suitable for their product and they are not willing to tell detail material information to mixer manufacturer. So, it has possibility to choose a wrong mixer when they use the mixer for production. Generally speaking, mixer manufacturer shall ask specific technical questions before choosing a right mixer for customers but our customers shall also have some basic technical knowledge.
What information is important for customer and what knowledge is necessary to have?
A. Basic Information of Ingredients
This is the most important and the first step to use a right mixer because different material has different chemical and physical characteristics which will lead to the success of mixer. So, following knowledge will be helpful for customer to choose mixer and also be useful for mixer manufacturer to choose right blender.
1. Flow Ability (Free flowing, adhesive, sticky)
2. Bulk Density (Light or Heavy)
3. Abrasiveness (Low, Middle or High)
4. Corrosiveness (Low, Middle or High)
5. Ingredient Component (bulk density diversity, component percentage diversity)
6. Physical Condition (Dry Powder, Moisture Powder, Paste, Slurry or something else)
7. Is there any chemical reaction happen during different product mixing
B. Capacity of Mixer
The size of mixer depends on mixing capacity. However, the mixing capacity depends on bulk density of material. If light density material is below 1kg/l, the mixer is chosen by working volume. If heavy density material is beyond 1kg/l, the mixer shall be chosen by weight. For mixer, the loading factor is around 30-60% (it could be 70% for light density material). The calculation is as following:
Total Volume of Mixer: A
Load Factor: 30%-60%
Working Volume: A x 30% to A x 60%
Capacity: A x 30% x density to A x 60% x density
C. Seal Part
The normal packing gland seal is enough for most material seal but if there is very fine mesh material like more than 500 meshes, our customer shall take consider it. Packing + Air purge seal will be necessary. If there is pressure inside mixer vessel, mechanical seal will be better.
D. Which Mixer is Suitable
No matter conical screw mixer, vertical ribbon mixer, ribbon blender, ploughshare mixer or paddle mixer, they all have good homogeneity mixing result. However, some typical process material can not be used in all mixers. First, mixer manufacturer should present the working principle of each mixer to customer and let them to know advantage and disadvantage of each mixers. For example, if customer want to add liquid into dry powder and if their material is easy to get blocked, ploughshare mixer with choppers are better to have good mixing and to break agglomerates. If customer want to have mild mixing in order to keep particle size of material, ribbon blender and conical screw mixer will be better to avoid destroy size of material. If there is minor adding percentage like 0.1-0.5%, paddle mixer and ploughshare mixer can get homogeneous mixing.
E. What is important for customers
When customer choose mixer, there should be one or two important concern. For example: Food Grade and GMP standard is necessary for food mixing. So, customer shall take note inside finish of mixer and dead space inside mixer.
