Frequently Asked Questions
Vortex mixers are designed for a wide variety of powders, granules, and powder-liquid mixtures.
Typical applications include chemical powders, food ingredients, pharmaceutical powders, animal feed, dry mortar, ceramics, battery materials, fertilizers, pesticides, minerals, refractory materials, and other bulk solids. The actual mixer configuration should be selected according to the physical and chemical properties of the material.
Vortex manufacture a wide range of industrial powder and bulk solids mixing equipment, including:
- Horizontal Ribbon Mixers
- Ploughshare Mixers
- Double Shaft Paddle Mixers (Paddle Mixers / “No-Gravity” Mixers)
- Conical Twin-Screw Mixers
- Vertical Screw Ribbon Mixers
- Double Cone Mixers
- V-Type Mixers
- 3D Motion Mixers
- Customized mixing systems and complete mixing lines
The most suitable mixer depends on your materials, production capacity, mixing ratio, required mixing time, and process conditions.
Mixer capacity should be evaluated using both the total vessel volume and the effective working volume. The required volume depends on material bulk density, batch weight, filling ratio and the mixing principle of the selected machine. A mixer should not normally be filled to its total geometric volume because sufficient space is required for material movement and effective mixing. For this reason, selecting a mixer based only on vessel volume can result in an unsuitable configuration.
The appropriate industrial powder mixer depends on several factors, including:
- Material characteristics
- Bulk density
- Particle size
- Required mixing uniformity
- Batch size or production capacity
- Moisture content
- Whether heating or drying is required
- Whether liquid addition is required
- Required discharge configuration
- Production and automation requirements
Vortex provides different powder mixer designs so that equipment can be selected according to the specific process requirements.
Vortex powder mixer selection depends on several factors, including:
- Material type and characteristics
- Bulk density and particle size
- Material flowability
- Moisture content
- Viscosity
- Mixing ratio
- Batch size or required production capacity
- Whether liquid addition is required
- Required mixing uniformity
- Temperature, pressure, vacuum, or other process requirements
Vortex engineers can recommend a suitable powder mixer based on your material and process requirements.

Select Mixer type based on raw materials’ features
1. What is Mixing?
Mixing is a common word in bulk material handling technology. It will make different types of raw material become homogeneity through being mixed in mixer machine with different types of agitator to get a good homogeneous result. The raw materials could be dry powder, paste, slurry or some other physical status but they all could be mixed in mixer. As for homogeneity, generally speaking, 95% homogeneity is a minimum requirement but even higher for some customers.
2. Different types of Raw Material
Looking from industries, it could be separated into foodstuff, animal feed, pharmaceutical, chemicals, fertilizer, dyestuff and building material industry. If looking from physical status, it could be dry powder, semi-dry powder with moisture, paste, slurry and liquid. Different types of raw material has different requirement in mixer machine. For example: food and pharmaceutical material must be food grade GMP or FDA design in mixer which shall not be antirust, easy clean and no dead space. As for chemical material, the mixer shall be anticorrosion. As for building material, the mixer shall be wear resistance. So, the manufacturer should carefully design in mixer focusing on different features of raw materials.
3. Mixing Agitator
Focusing on different features of raw material, we shall have customized design in mixing agitator and mixer choosing. For some easy broken material, we shall carefully choosing mild mixing agitator like ribbon and screw to avoid high shearing. For some high abrasive material, the mixing agitator shall be chosen high wear resistant material like 16Mn or Hardox. For heat sensitive material, we shall choose mild and low speed mixing. For viscous material, strong and heavy duty agitator shall be used for mixer.
4. Material Conveying Handling
It is a easy and simple process to convey the raw material like screw conveyor, belt conveyor and vacuum conveying. In food and pharmaceutical industry, vacuum conveying is preferred by customers.
5. Mixers
Nowadays, there are many types of mixers like conical screw mixer, ribbon mixer, plough shear mixer, twin shafts paddle mixer, vertical ribbon mixer. Our company Vortex provide all of these mixers according to customer requirement. Different mixers can be used in different application and area. Conical mixer is better for low density material and big capacity. Ribbon mixer is widely used in food and plastic industry. Plough Shear Mixer is a high homogeneity and short mixing time mixer. Twin Shafts Paddle Mixer is the most homogenous mixer. You could find detail specification of different mixers in our website.6. Mixer Application
With development of bulk material handling process, the customers need mixer for mixing, coating, drying, reaction and granulation. The mixers are designed to be multifunction to replace other equipment.
No matter what material you want to mix, Vortex will provide professional guide to help customer choose a suitable mixers for their material handling.
